Animal control officers remove 4 afghan hounds

from Camby Indiana home

On Wednesday, September 2, 2009 Animal Control Officers from Animal Care and Control, Indianapolis responding to complaints from neighbors seized 4 afghan hounds from a private address in Camby, Indiana. Our thanks to the Animal Control Officers and to Mary Lee Pappas, Community Programs Manager and to Laurie Bonebrake for their assistance in getting these 4 to safety.  Our grateful thanks to each of you.

On Thursday afternoon, AHRCO volunteers borrowed 'the puppy truck' and set off for Indianapolis to retrieve our new charges.   It was a long drive during which they entertained themselves trying to name our new 4-legged friends.   By the time they arrived, they had settled on 4 names but didn’t know for sure who would be who.  However, the moment they met the cream girl it was obvious, she would be Mercedes aka Mercy.  Her condition was beyond words... only tears.

The poor girl weighed 35 lbs, yet she came out of the crate, alert, and tail up and so happy to see us.  She knew that help had arrived.   As we walked her around outside we noticed the bleeding from her rectum, her obvious difficulty when attempting a bowl movement.   It appeared that part of her rectum is being expelled when she attempts a bowl movement.  She cried as her rectum retracted, but was soon  interested in what the next part of this adventure would bring for her.       Unfortunately, little is known regarding the origination of these dogs.   While the surrendering owner  gave some information to the Officers, further investigation caste doubts on her story.

Of the other 3: Moira  (2 year old domino) underweight and infested with parasites.  The 2 boys Malcolm (approx 12mths  and Miles (approx 3 yrs)  were also infested with parasites but did not appear overly thin; Malcolm was matted and had a large open wound on his back - probably from where the mats had pulled at his skin (Laurie had removed mats from his back.)  Miles also matted plus his coat was full of wood shavings.   Both boys are all energy and looking for mischief.

Back in Ohio, all 4 were taken to our local veterinarian for treatment where it was recommended that Mercy be transported to MedVet for urgent care.    After examination and testing, Mercy was diagnosed with a cecal inversion and prepped for immediate surgery.   We offer our grateful thanks to Dr. Karl Maritato and the staff at MedVet for saving her life.   Mercy came through the surgery well but stayed under the watchful eye of the experts for 2 days before being released to our care.  It is Dr. Maritato's opinion that Mercy's condition was caused by a prolonged infestation of parasites.

Mercy is currently recovering at AHRCO headquarters where she is enjoying lots of attention.
